Schweinsteiger doubtful for United’s opening game against Tottenham

Manchester United’s new signing Bastian Schweinsteiger is in a race to be fit for their opening match against Tottenham in a couple of weeks, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The German international will have to prove his fitness in United’s mid-week game against Paris Saint-Germain on wednesday before he is handed a Premier League debut against Spurs.

United’s 30-year-old signing joined them this summer after signing from Bayern Munich for £15 million. Schweinsteiger wasn’t involved in the Red Devils most recent game against Barcelona after it was revealed that he wouldn’t be risked after picking up a knock in training.

The former Bayern Munich captain did play 45 minutes in both of United’s other pre-season games against Club America and San Jose during their tour of the United States.

The midfielder has been doing some light training but he will have to re-start his training with the main group however before he is even considered for the final pre-season game against PSG.

Schweinsteiger  was a key figure in Germany’s World Cup win back in 2014 and despite injury meaning he only made 20 apperances for Bayern last season still managed to score five goals and create thirty chances for the Bundesliga champions.

Manchester United fans will be hoping that the German can win the battle he faces over fitness and be the guiding force for his new side as they launch their title bid for the Premier League. In combination with their other signings of Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay fans will be hoping for their first Premier League title since 2013.
