Mohamed Aboutrika placed on terror list

Mohamed Aboutrika

Legendary Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika has been placed on the country’s terror list for his alleged ties to the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
The 38-year-old, the 2008 BBC African Footballer of the Year who played more than 100 games for the Pharaohs, is accused of funding the organisation, which Egypt’s government consider a terrorist one.

Aboutrika publicly supported Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi’s successful presidential bid in 2012. Morsi was ousted just a year later following mass anti-government protests.
Aboutrika had a number of assets seized by authorities in 2015, and now faces losing his passport and being banned from leaving the country.
His lawyer, Mohamed Osman, has indicated the decision will be appealed and that Aboutrika had “not been convicted or formally notified of any of the charges against him”.
